Awards show red carpets have been ultra boring lately, in terms of outfits. Everyone and their stylist is playing it safe. Forget the risk takers – there isn’t even interesting attire in Hollywood.
And Bollywood, well, they are trying too hard to be western or their version of modern. In the Motherland, skin is in – and not necessarily tastefully. The International Indian Film Academy Awards (IIFAs) were held recently in Macau and the Bollywood babes were either wearing skimpy saris (an oxymoron in my book – saris were not meant to be worn with strapless blouses, ji) or down-to-there and up-to-there evening gowns.
One of the few exceptions was Sonam Kapoor, Anil Kapoor’s daughter. She wore a classic (and huge!) kundan set and married it seamlessly with an ivory sari-inspired Anamika Khanna Grecian gown, gold glads and contrasting vintage-y Jimmy Choo clutch.

A piece of jewellery like that deserves the spotlight, so the simple, crinkled silk gown, flats and soft makeup were a great choice.
Sonam secured the best look of the Awards season – on either side of the Mediterranean – as far as I’m concerned.
