Missed: John Huges – The Man and His Movies

The world lost John Hughes today, much too young, at the age of 59. His movies resonated for so many, especially those of us who lived our teenage years in the ’80s. I cannot imagine high school without Blane, Duckie, Jake and Samantha. They were a part of the extended circle of friends, as much as Sonja, Ellen, Mary, Mary, Nen and Vera were…we lived so many of their experiences.

John Hughes was our hero. We found our musical icons on the posters in the bedroom backgrounds of his lead characters, at a time when everyone else was listening to Madonna and Michael J. He spoke to our generation – before there were labels for generations like X and Y and Next.

We wanted to be able to whip up thrift store ensembles like Andie. We wanted to date a guy dressed like Jake. We wanted to run our fingers through Blane’s hair. And where else, at the time, could you find teenage angst and fashion in one scene?

Allison Reynolds: You have problems.
Andrew Clark: Oh, I have problems?
Allison Reynolds: You do everything everyone tells you to do and that is a problem.
Andrew Clark: Okay, fine, but I didn’t dump my purse out on the couch and invite everyone into my problems.

John Hughes, you got us. And we love you and your films for it.

If you were here, we’d tell you so.

Update August 9: A big thanks to Jenx67 for including this in her 5Favourite Posts of the week.

Lest we forget the soundtracks that never really got appreciated in the cinema unless you managed to close your eyes and listen hard…neat thing to do while watching a film…maybe that’s why we went to them so often…
