Maison Martin Margiela constantly pushes the limits of wearable footwear.
This season, the House that Martin built came up with an innovative pair of pumps.
This pair has a criss-cross ankle strap, but in other versions of the shoe, the only thing holding your foot inside is a thin, nude-coloured strap of leather.
It’s the illusion of a shoe that won’t stay on.

However, it was no illusion when I saw a similar shoe at Philip Lim’s SS11 show.

That exaggerated side cover of Lim’s shoe also reminds me of last season’s Margiela pumps – a boo-boo the band-aid cannot completely cover.
